Report

Injuries meant that Jermaine McGillvary and Tom Symonds missed the trip to the Halliwell-Jones Stadium for the last match of the regular Super League season prior to the split off for the Super 8s and the Middle 8s to take on a Warrington Wolves side who were looking to reach second place in the Super League table. Oliver Roberts and Nathan Mason came into the Giants line-up.

The Wolves took the lead after 7 minutes with a spectacular try; the Giants were attacking inside the Wolves 20 but lost possession when trying to keep the ball alive on the last tackle which was picked up by Stefan Rachford who raced away down the right wing position some 85 metres to touch down in the corner, Kurt Gidley missing the conversion. Chris Sandow's high kicks were causing problems for Ryan Brierley resulting in the Wolves monopolising possession and field position and it was no surprise when they increased the lead. A break down the left and Atkins inside pass put Ben Currie over between the posts with Kurt Gidley adding the extras to give the Wolves a 10 point lead. The Giants had not enjoyed much field position but when Matty Russell knocked on Danny Brough’s high bomb inside his 20 the Giants took full advantage, Jamie Ellis’s cut-out pass putting Gene Ormsby over in the right corner with Danny Brough adding a touchline conversion. With 19 minutes gone the Giants were only trailing by 4 points and 8 minutes later they levelled, Danny Brough’s grubber to the ingoal area being touched down by Aaron Murphy in the left corner. Danny Brough failed with the conversion attempt. As the Wolves sought to respond a Sandow kick following a penalty forced a goal line drop out but the Giants defence stood firm and on 37 minutes  following a Wolves error in possession they took the lead, Gene Ormsby touching down for his second try of the afternoon in the corner, Danny Brough’s conversion attempt again just missing the target. On the stroke of half time a Wolves penalty led to a Ben Westwood try between the posts with Kurt Gidley’s conversion putting his side 2 points to the good at the hooter.

The Giants had shown good character to fight back after the early reverses but needed to tighten up defensively to repel a lively Wolves side.

Seven minutes into the second half the Giants were back in front, taking full advantage of a Wolves error in possession in their 20 with Nathan Mason showing great strength to power over by the posts, Danny Brough adding the extras. The lead though did not last long, a fine individual try by Chris Sandow   with Gidley’s conversion putting the home side back in the lead with 52 minutes gone. Two minutes later that lead was extended when Danny Brough’s kick was charged down and the ball bounced fortuitously into Wolves hands culminating in a Ryan Atkins try and a Kurt Gidley conversion. Trailing by 8 points the Giants again fought back and despite having made a series of handling errors in this half they had a spell on attack with Aaron Murphy almost getting over on the left. After a penalty though Gene Ormsby went over in the left corner for his hat trick try of the match with Danny Brough’s touchline conversion attempt going narrowly wide, and then a superbly worked move between Danny Brough and Ryan Hinchcliffe put Craig Huby through the defence on an angled run to touch down between the posts, Danny Brough adding the extras. The Giants were back in front by 2 points with 10 minutes left but they suffered a blow on 75 minutes when Craig Huby had to leave the field with an injury and 2 minutes later conceded a penalty which gave field position to the Wolves and culminated in Sandow and Gidley combining to put Daryl Clark over for what turned out to be the match winning score, Kurt Gidley adding the extras.

It had been a valiant performance by the Giants who had come ever so close to success against the high flying Wolves. After a break next week end for the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup Semi-finals the Giants then begin the vital Super 8s Qualifiers which will determine their status for next season.
