Injuries and a suspension meant a young and inexperienced team had to be put out to face last season’s Challenge Cup winners Hull FC and their cause was not helped by the late withdrawal in the pre-match warm up of Lee Gaskell through illness. Hull were without the injured Gareth Ellis and suspended Liam Watts.

The Giants started on the front foot with Danny Brough’s high kick being spilled by Jamie Shaul and from the susequent play the Giants touched down in the right corner only to see the referee rule a forward pass in the build-up. On their first foray into Giants territory Hull scored. A Sam Wood error led to Fetuli Talanoa powering over in the left corner on 5 minutes with Marc Sneyd adding the extras. The Giants were becoming their own worst enemies with a series of individual errors with Hull capitalising at regular intervals. When Ryan Hinchcliffe’s lobbed pass some 30 metres out was intercepted Marc Sneyd raced away for a try to which he added the extras and on 24 minutes Albert Kelly  dummied his way through the defence for another try with Marc Sneyd again adding the extra 2 points. The Giants were getting a reasonable share of possession but without being able to create any meaningful scoring chances and on 36 minutes after a penalty Marc Sneyd went over for his second try of the evening and again he added the extras to give his a 24 point lead. The Giants might have got a try back just before the half time hooter bu Shannon Wakeman dropped the ball by the side of the posts.

The second half began with a spell of Giants pressure but no score and when Hull got possession a break down the centre led to Albert Kelly’s second try of the evening. Marc Steyn’s conversion put the lead at 30 points on 47 minutes and the result more or less settled. On 55 minutes Josh Griffin got on the scoresheet with Sneyd tagging on the extra 2 but eventually, on 65 minutes good passing after a spell of concerted attacks put Sam Wood over in the right corner for the first Giants score of the match Danny Brough narrowly missing the touchline conversion. A loose ball from Sam Rapira was then snapped up by Carlos Tuimavave who raced 80 metres to the line and with just 5 minutes left Marc Sneyd got his 3rd try of the match, both the last 2 tries being converted by Steyn. The Giants though got the last try of the evening on 78 minutes Oliver Roberts getting over in the right corner with Sam Wood missing the conversion.

It had been a difficult evening for the Giants but they had kept going to the end and deserved the late scores. The inexperience though showed against a powerful Hull outfit. Next up for the Giants is a trip to Leigh Centurions on Friday 10 March kick off 8.00pm.
