Full Time Report

The Giants welcomed back to the starting line-up after injury Jermaine McGillvary, Leroy Cudjoe, Aaron Murphy and Lee Gaskell and also Ukuma Ta’ai after suspension for the trip to Leigh Sports Village to take on Super League newcomers Leigh Centurions who were promoted at the of last season.

Early field position and ball possession was with the Giants but without them being able to breach a solid defence but when the home side eventually got a foothold in the Giants half swift passing to the right saw Adam Higson touch down in the right corner after a penalty with Ben Reynolds landing the touchline conversion with 12 minutes gone. Further exchanges became a bit feisty with chances coming the Giants way but not converted into scores. The Centurions forced 2 goal line drop-outs but the Giants defence remained firm although both sides were making a succession of errors which made for a stop-start encounter. Then on 37 minutes Jamie Acton forced his way over by the posts for a try with Ben Reynolds adding the etras and the sides went in at the interval with the Centurions holding a 12 point advantage.

The Giants would be disappointed with their first half performance with too many chances going begging and lapses in defence which had enabled the Centurions to touch down for a couple of tries.

The second half started with the Centurions kicking the ball out on the full but the Giants could not capitalise and a succession of errors and penalties followed for the first 20 minutes of the half. Jermaine McGillvary touched down for the Giants but a forward pass ruled out any score and a melee on 58 minutes saw Sebastine Ikahihifo and Jamie Acton dispatched to the sinbin. 2 minutes later Ben Reynolds missed a penalty goal attempt but a kick to the ingoal area was then not diffused and Harrison Hansen touched down for a soft try with Ben Reynolds adding the extras. 2 further tries in the last 5 minutes added to a Giants night of woe Ben Reynolds and Sam Hopkins being the try scorers with both tries being converted by Ben Reynolds.

The 30 point margin did not reflect the effort which the Giants had put in but lack of a cutting edge in attack had cost the Giants dear. A massive improvement will be required next time out when the Giants travel to champions Wigan Warriors on Sunday 19 March kick off 3.00pm.
