Ryan Brierley replaced the suspended Danny Brough for the Friday night trip to League Leaders Castleford Tigers at the Mend-A- Hose Jungle with conditions ideal for a game of fast open Rugby League football with the Giants looking to break a sequence of 4 consecutive defeats.
Early exchanges were even with the Giants taking a 7th minute lead following pressure on the Tigers line Ryan Hinchcliffe touching down wide out on the right Ryan Brierley missing the conversion attempt. The Tigers were enjoying the bulk of possession but handling errors and wrong options prevented any until the 19th minute when Ben Roberts opened their account after the ball had been kept alive inside the Giants 20. Luke Gale added the extras to put the home side in the lead and 2 minutes later the lead was extended with a Jake Webster try, Luke Gale missing the conversion attempt. The Tigers were now in command and on 28 minutes after a penalty Mike McMeeken touched down, Luke Gale Gale adding the extras. There were no further scores before half time but the Tigers were having the majority of ball possession and field with the Giants struggling to put together any concerted pressure on the Tigers defence.
The second half began disastrously for the Giants, the Tigers scoring direct from the kick off. Shenton and Eden made ground on their left and created space for Luke Gale to sprint away some 40 metres for a try and although he missed the conversion he added the extras 2 minutes later when Adam Milner touched down after weak Giants defence had been exposed down the centre. On 50 minutes a 90 metre break and try by Ryan Brierley who also added the goal gave the Giants brief hope but that was as good as it got with further Tigers tries coming at regular intervalst to Luke Gale (2), and Joel Monaghan ( 3 ) to complete a match to forget for the Giants and their supporters. Luke Gale added the extras to 3 of the tries, the Giants getting a cosolation try on 63 minutes when Lee Gaskell touched down a kick to the ingoal area which the Tigers failed to make dead, Ryan Brierley tagging on the extras.
A huge improvement will be needed next time out when the Giants travel to St Helens Friday 7 April kick off 8.00pm.
