Full Time Report

Leroy Cudjoe (knee) and Ukuma Ta’ai (back) were  late withdrawals from the Giants side to travel to the Totally Wicked Stadium St Helens on a pleasant dry evening, Sam Wood and Nathan Mason coming in making a largely inexperienced team to face a St Helens side lacking James Roby.

Early exchanges were even with both sides making errors with the kicks of Danny Brough and Lee Gaskell gaining good field position for the Giants. Defences on both sides were resolute and then on 17 minutes Dale Ferguson sustained and had to leave the field.  3 Saints tries in a 10 minute spell starting on 26 minutes quickly followed as the game took a dramatic turn. First Theo Fages darted over from dummy half by the posts with Marc Percival adding the extras and 7 minutes later Fages was over again on the left rounding off a sweeping passing move, and 3 minutes on Adam Swift touched down following another passing move. Mark Percival could not add the extras to either of the last 2 tries but the Saints went in at the half time hooter with a 14 point lead.

The Saints started the  second half on the attack on the back of a penalty incurred by the Giants on the first tackle of the half but the Giants defence held firm and gradually as the half progressed the Giants began to get on top piling on the pressure onto the Saints defence. On 56 minutes Lee Gaskell’s break from deep led to a goal line drop out and this led to a Darnell McIntosh try in the right corner, Danny Brough just missing the conversion attempt. The score gave the Giants a huge boost with Danny Brough  taking command on the back of a powerful forwards performance with Shannon Wakeman prominent and Lee Gaskell a continuing danger to the home defence. A further goal line drop out was forced but the chance was missed when the ball was thrown into touch and then on 70 minutes a grubber kick to the ingoal area led to a second try of the evening for Darnell McIntosh by the posts, Danny Brough’s conversion reducing the deficit to 4 points with 10 minutes to go. 5 minutes later the scores were level. Lee Gaskell broke from centre field and Sam Wood touched down wide out on the right. Danny Brough failed with the touchline conversion and despite a failed drop goal attempt by Danny Brough  there were no further scores and for the second time this season the Giants came back from Lancashire with a share of the spoils.

Excellent Giants defence had been key in the second period with one Danny Brough tackle on Theo Fages being memorable. The all-round effort of all the team augured well for the next matches with a benchmark being set. Next Giants action is Wednesday 12 April at the John Smith’s Stadium kick off 8.00pm when Catalan are the visitors.
