Full Time Report

Jake Mamo made his first Giants appearance following his move from Newcastle Knights in the close season with Tom Symonds also returning after his long injury absence. Darnell McIntosh moved to the wing and Alex Mellor went into the second row for the visit of Catalans Dragons.

Early exchanges were marked by a succession of errors and it was the 14th minute before the first score came. The Giants took the lead with an Aaron Murphy try in the left corner from Darnell McIntosh’s inside pass with Danny Brough adding the conversion. The Dragons forced a goal line drop out from the ensuing restart kick off but poor handling let them down in the Giants 20. On 20 minutes though they drew level with Tony Gigot scoring by the posts after a penalty had set up the field position, Walsh then added the extras. A Danny Brough kick forced a goal line drop out but the Dragons defence kept the Giants at bay until the 36th minute when Oliver Roberts made a strong 40 metre break down the centre. From the resulting play the ball was moved to the right where Sam Wood’s delicate grubber to the in-goal area was touched down by Jake Mamo for a debut try, Danny Brough missing the conversion attempt. The lead did not last until half time as the Dragons made a break down the left through Aiton who handed on to Myler who found Williame to touch down on the stroke of the hooter. Luke Walsh’s conversion gave the Dragons a 2 point interval lead in what had been an error strewn first half with the Giants looking the most likely.

The second half began badly for the Giants with a Richie Myler try by the posts as they kept the ball alive through a succession of hands, Luke Walsh’s conversion putting the Dragons 8 points to the good. Danny Brough appeared to take exception to the award of a try and was sinbinned by the referee and the Dragons took full advantage. Just before the hour mark, swift passing to the left wing led to Duport touching down before Walsh added the touchline conversion. Luke Walsh was able to run in for a try just after the return of Danny Brough, however his conversion attempt was unsuccessful. With an 18 point lead the Dragons looked to be uncatchable, but on 68 minutes Jermaine McGillvary scored in the right corner after Darnell McIntosh had been held on the left, with Brough then adding the extras. Sebasteine Ikahihifo’s 50 metre break down the centre raised hopes of a further score but with Tony Gigot successfully kicking a drop-goal Catalans were able to slow the Giants momentum. The Giants did though get the last score of the evening as the hooter sounded, Sam Wood touching down wide out on the right after Jake Mamo’s powerful run, Danny Brough added the extra 2 points.

The visitors were able to come away with the two points despite the Giants closing out the scores in an entertaining final twenty minutes. Next up for the Giants is an away trip to Warrington Wolves on Monday 17th April, Kick-off 8pm.
