Report

After last weekend’s Magic success at Newcastle over Catalan Dragons the Giants fielded the same team for the short trip to the Beaumont Legal Stadium, Wakefield for the West Yorkshire derby against Wakefield Trinity on a very warm sunny evenug with the temperaure hovering in the mid-twenties.

The Giants started started slowly conceding a penalty in the first set of 6 tackles and the field position gained enabled Trinity to move the ball quickly across the field where Ben Jones-Bishop showed his pace to race over in the right corner for the game’s first try on 3 minutes, Liam Finn adding the touchline conversion. It did not take the Giants long to respond and in a 10 minute spell between the 12th and 22nd minutes they ran in 3 tries. Jake Mamo got the first after a penalty, the ball being moved from right to left with Mamo touching down in the left hand corner, followed by Jermaine McGillvary in the right corner after another penalty and on the twenty second minute Lee Gaskell crossed by the posts after some excellent passing and support  play. Martyn Ridyard added the extras to all 3 tries to give the Giants a 12 point advantage. Field position for the third try had been set up by a searing break from deep by Jermaine McGillvary and carried on by Jake Mamo. The Giants though then became careless conceding 2 penalties and only an excellent tackle by Jake Mamo on Caton-Brown saved a try before Rees Lyne raced over on the right, Liam Finn missing the conversion. The momentum was now with Trinity and before half time they reduced the deficit further forcing a goal line drop out and getting a Danny Kirmond try goaled by Liam Finn.

The Giants led by 2 points at the break but they would be disappointed that they had allowed the home side back into the game after being in control.

The Giants began the second half strongly  with Lee Gaskell’s 40/20 setting up field position for Dale Ferguson to touch down by the posts on 46 minutes Martyn Ridyard adding the extras. Darnell McIntosh was then just short on the left but the momentum began to switch back to Trinity, the Giants defence beginning to creak and on 58 minutes Lyne took advantage by cutting through for a try goaled by Liam Finn. The deficit was now just 2 points with a quarter of the game left Martyn Ridyard doubling this to 4 on 68 minutes with a penalty goal. With 8 minutes left a long pass found Ben Jones-Bishop in lots of space to touch down out wide on the right for a try with Williams’s conversion putting Trinity ahead by 2 points. The Giants strove manfully for the last few minutes but errors under pressure thwarted them and the home side finished with the 2 League points.

The Giants had tried their utmost and were distraught at the final hooter. It was a game which could and probably should have been won. Another vital Top 8 encounter is next with Warrington the visitors on Sunday June at the John Smith’s Stadium kick off 3.00pm.
