Report

New acquisition from Canberra Raiders Jordan Turner made his Giants debut at left centre with Danny Brough returning after suspension , Martyn Ridyard missing out, for the visit of Warrington Wolves to the John Smith’s Stadium on a sunny afternoon with a cool breeze. The Giants were looking for a victory which would take them above the Wolves in the League table.

The Giants started strongly and took the lead on 6 minutes following a penalty, Danny Brough’s clever delayed pass giving Oliver Roberts the chance to force his way over the goal line for the first try of the afternoon, Danny Brough adding the extras. The Wolves fought back , Kevin Btown’s kick forcing a goal line drop out but they found the Giants defence in uncompromising mood. A Danny Brough 40/20 then set up field position which led to the Giants second try’ Lee Gaskell was balked in his attempt to follow up his short kick ahead and from the resulting penalty Leroy Cudjoe under pressure did well to get a pass away to Jermaine McGillvary who powered over in the right corner, Danny Brough missing the conversion. The Wolves then had a spell on attack but again found the Giants defence in fine form and could not breach the claret and gold wall and on 32 minutes the Giants stretched further ahead swift passing putting Aaron Murphy over in the left corner. Danny Brough could not add the extras and the Giants went in at half time with a 14 point lead, Danny Brough’s drop goal attempt on the hooter failing to reach the target.

It had been a dominant Giants first half performance both on attack and defence.

The second half began scrappily with both sides making errors, Danny Brough’s high kick being dropped by Kevin Penny but Danny Brough could not pick up the loose ball and the chance was lost. On 45 minutes though the Giants increased the lead Paul Clough charging through on an angled run to touch down unopposed by the posts for his first Giants try, Danny Brough adding the extras. 6 minutes later the went to 26 with a debut try for Jordan Turner from Dale Ferguson’s pass, Jermaine McGillvary having been held up over the line on the right. Danny Brough added the extras and the result was now virtually certain. The match officials then incurred the wrath of the Giants supporters by disallowing a Giants score to Jake Mamo after a 65 metre run to the line and the Wolves did get on the scoresheet with a Tom Lineham try in the left corner after a penalty. Declan Patton could not add the extras and the remaining 25 minutes belonged to the Giants as they put on their best performance for some considerable time. A superb flowing movement culminated in a Jake Mamo try with Ryan Hinchcliffe, Lee Gaskell and Jermaine McGillvary all involved in the build up. Danny Brough added the extras as he did to Jermaine McGillvary’s 63rd minute try in the right corner after another expansive move and finally on 75 minutes Jordan Murphy’s pass to Aaron Murphy put the wingman in for his second try of the afternoon. Danny Brough’s touchline conversion gave the Giants a 40 point winning margin and moved them above the Wolves in the League table.

Another tough task awaits them next Saturday June 10 in Perpignan against the Catalan Dragons.
