Full Time Report

Dale Ferguson returned to the Giants starting line-up for the visit of Leigh Centurions to the John Smith’s Stadium and with Martyn Ridyard unable to play as part of his loan deal from Leigh Sam Wood came in at Centre with Lee Gaskell moving to stand off half. Darnell McIntosh continued at left wing in place of the injured Aaron Murphy. The Giants needed a victory to seal their place in the Betfred Super League Super 8s after next week’s end of the regular season and participation in next season’s Super League. Leigh were already destined to take part in the Qualifiers at the cut-off point.

The first 20 minutes were eminently forgettable as both sides conceded an abundance of penalties and made a succession of errors which made for a lack of continuity and frustration but on 21 minutes came a touch of class as the Giants produced a flowing passing move with several players involved and following a terrific release from Leroy Cudjoe, Jermaine McGillvary’s inside pass put Lee Gaskell over by the posts with Danny Brough adding the extras.

As the Giants strove to increase their lead a kick to the in-goal area forced a goal line drop out but the defence held firm and there was no further score until the 34th minute when Danny Brough slotted over a penalty goal. Leroy Cudjoe then went close and a spell of Leigh pressure up to half time brought out the best in the Giants defensive capabilities, the Centurions going in at the half time hooter scoreless.

It had been an untidy first 40 minutes with plenty of effort but a lack of creativity and a host of errors.

The Giants effectively secured the outcome of the match early in the second half with tries on 43 and 45 minutes. First Ukuma Ta’ai scorched over by the posts and then when Danny Brough’s spiralling high kick was spilled the alert Lee Gaskell touched down the loose ball in the right corner, Danny Brough converting both tries. The Giants now had a 20-point advantage and although the Centurions got on the scoresheet on 57 minutes with an unconverted Drinkwater try, the Giants defence did not concede again. The last 20 minutes saw the Giants on attack with Jordan Rankin going close and also Ukuma Ta’ai, but Jermaine McGillvary was the only try scorer after he had made the initial break down centre field, Leroy Cudjoe putting the wingman in at the right corner. Danny Brough’s touchline conversion maintained his 100% kicking record for the evening and completed a deserved Giants victory.

Next week’s trip to Hull completes the regular league schedule ahead of the Betfred Super League Super 8s. The game at KCOMS Stadium is Friday 21st July at 8.00pm.
