Full Time Report

The Giants entertained Swinton Lions of the Championship in their first foray into this season’s Ladbrokes Challenge Cup with a host of changes from their normal line-up, Mamo, McGillvary, Cudjoe, Brough, Tai, Ferguson and Hinchcliffe all being absentees. Isaac Farrell and Matthew English made debut appearances.

The Giants were the first to attack and took an early lead after a penalty had established field position inside the Lions 20 swift passing to the left created space for Aaron Murphy to touch down in the corner with Isaac Farrell landing the touchline conversion. The Lions quickly responded as the Giants gave away possession inside their own 20 and Robinson took advantage to cross in the left corner , Atkin’s touchline conversion attempt hitting a post and bouncing out. Isaac Farrell’s restart kick went out on the full and this allied to a Simpson knock-on from a high kick enabled Rhodri Lloyd to pick up the loose ball dummy Sam Wood and touch down to give his side the lead with Christopher Atkin’s conversion putting them 6 points to the good. It was quickly becoming evident that the Championship side were going to prove a difficult side for the young Giants side to overcome but 2 quick tries for the Giants for Sam Wood and Darnell McIntosh  after Lions errors and penalties both goaled by Isaac Farrell gave the Giants a 6 point lead only for this to be reduced to 2 just before the half time hooter when a kick to the ingoal area led to a goal line drop out, Michael Butt touching down in the left corner and Christopher Atkin adding the conversion.

The Lions had caused the Giants a host of problems in that first 40 minutes and with the second half some 10 minutes old a flare up in the Giants half led to a melee and the sinbinning of Ikahihifo and Bate. The Lions coped better than the Giants to the loss of a player swift passing leading to a try for Connor Dwyer. Atkin’s conversion put his side 4 points to the good and galvanised the Giants into a response O’Brien, Roberts and Farrell all going close before Oliver Roberts charged over following a penalty. Isaac Farrell’s conversion put the Giants back in front by 2 points but the last 7 minutes belonged to the Lions. Consecutive goal line drop outs were forced with the Giants problems being added to with a series of errors and finally leading to a Waterworth try from a kick to the ingoal area, Hankinson adding the extras. Time now ran out for the Giants to respond and the tie ended with a jubilant Lions side celebrating victory.

The Giants are back in Super League action on Thursday 27 April at Headingley against the Leeds Rhinos kick off 8.00pm.
