Full Time Report

The first game of the Super 8s brought West Yorkshire neighbours Wakefield Trinity to the John Smith’s Stadium on a lovely sunny evening ideal for Rugby League football. Jordan Turner and Daniel Smith returned to the Giants side after injury and Alex Mellor also came in, injury victims Dale Ferguson and Ollie Roberts missing out.

The game began with a host of Trinity errors giving the Giants field possession and the bulk of possession and it was no surprise when they took a 7th minute lead. Ben Jones-Bishop’s handling error was seized upon by the alert Danny Brough who touched down the loose ball, the conversion attempt by the try scorer going wide.

4 minutes later following a scrum in the Trinity 20 quick passing to the left gave Darnell McIntosh the opportunity to race in for his 10th try of the season, Danny Brough adding the extras. Danny Brough’s kicking game was causing havoc in the Trinity defence but when they had a spell on attack Jordan Rankin’s tackle 10 metres out saved a likely score.

On 28 minutes, another Trinity error in possession 20 metres out was gleefully picked up by Ryan Hinchcliffe who raced away for the Giants third try of the evening, Danny Brough’s conversion putting the Giants 16 points to the good which was increased by 2 3 minutes later with a Danny Brough penalty goal.

Trinity did get on the scoresheet just before half time when the Giants allowed a high kick into their 20 to bounce resulting in a Sam Williams try with Liam Finn converting.

Trinity had been their own worst enemies in a first half of errors with Danny Brough dictating matters in an overall dominant Giants display with defence a strong point.

The start of the second half saw a much-improved Trinity, an early kick to the corner forcing a goal line drop out.  A succession of penalties incurred by the Giants also helped the Trinity cause but strong defence kept the Giants line intact and it was the Giants who opened the second half scoring with a Danny Brough penalty goal on 51 minutes. The lead was then extended on 62 minutes Leroy Cudjoe going over for a try after good passing on the right, Danny Brough adding the extras. Scott Grix kick threatened the Giants line but again Jordan Rankin dealt with the danger and when the Giants returned to the attack clever play on the right created an opening for Jermaine McGillvary to power over, the goal kick failing. A Lee Gaskell break almost led to another Giants score but Scott Grix saved the day for the visitors with a fine tackle but he could do nothing to prevent the Giants final score of the evening on 78 minutes when an exhilarating bout of passing featuring an amazing long overhead pass by Leroy Cudjoe was finished off by Daniel Smith charging over to touch down by the posts. Danny Brough added his 6th goal of the evening.

The Giants had thoroughly deserved their success based upon a strong defence. More of the same will be required next time out when the Giants travel to Wigan to take on the Challenge Cup finalists Friday 11 August kick off 8.00pm.
