Full Time Report

Injuries ruled out Jake Mamo, Adam Walne, Tom Symonds and Michael Lawrence from the Giants side to face Hull Kingston Rovers at the John Smith’s Stadium in Round 6 of the Betfred Super League on a misty damp evening, the Giants looking for back to back victories after last week’s success at Widnes.

Early pressure was all with the Giants with good defence holding them out but the deadlock was broken on 8 minutes when Danny Brough’s pass put in Oliver Roberts for a try on the right, Danny Brough adding the extras.

Some 5 minutes later the game suddenly swung the Rovers way. After a penalty and on their first attack in the Giants half Rovers powered through the Giants defence on their left, Heffernan touching down with Ryan Shaw adding the extras and 2 minutes later they repeated the exercise with Adam Quinlan getting the try as the defence fell apart. Ryan Shaw’s conversion gave Rovers a 6 point lead after the Giants had made all the early running.

The Rovers now had the momentum with the Giants struggling to find any fluency in their play and before half time further points were added, first a penalty goal to Ryan Shaw on 35 minutes and then on the stroke a try for Shaw in the right corner from an Adam Quinlan grubber to the ingoal area, converted by Ryan Shaw.

The last event of a disappointing first half performance for the Giants was an unsuccessful drop goal attempt by Danny McGuire but he could look back on a half which had seen him gradually take control of the game leading his side to a 14 point advantage.

The second half began in similar fashion to the first half but again the Giants failed to open up the visitors defence despite a Danny Brough kick forcing a goal line drop out.

A Justin Carney run brought the Rovers back to life and this then led to a James Greenwood try following a scintillating 80 metre run by prop forward Robert Mulhern picking up a Giants lost ball in the Rovers 20. Once again the try was converted by Ryan Shaw and he added 2 further conversions before the end on 75 and 79 minutes to tries for himself and finally Danny McGuire giving a final total of 38 points.

The Giants had been outplayed leaving them with much to do before next Friday’s trip to Wigan 23 March kick off 7.45pm.
