Full Time Report

The Giants gave Betfred Super League debuts to Jake Wardle and Oliver Russell from the Academy for the visit of Widnes Vikings to the John Smith’s Stadium looking for a victory which would move them off the foot of the Betfred Super League table on a warm sunny evening ideal for Rugby League football.

Aaron Murphy was though absent through injury and Jake Mamo moved from full back to left wing, Jordan Rankin slotting in at full back.

The first 15 minutes saw both sides striving for the early breakthrough with the Vikings forcing a goal line drop out. The Giants though got the first score. On 15 minutes after a spell of pressure in the Vikings 20 Jordan Rankin’s lofted angled kick to the ingoal area was skilfully clutched out of the air by debutant Jake Wardle for a fine try on the left, Sam Wood failing with the conversion attempt.

A run by Jake Mamo down the left touchline raised hopes of a further score but the wingman’s inside pass went to ground and on 27 minutes, after consecutive penalties, the Vikings scored with Danny Craven touching down. Tom Gilmore’s conversion put his sided two points ahead.

Eight minutes later after a spell of concerted Giants pressure Sam Wood cut through and touched down wide out on the right, the try scorer converting the score with a fine touchline kick. Both sides had further chances to score before the half-time hooter, but without success, and at the break the Giants led by four points.

It had been a wholehearted team effort in the first 40 minutes with the crowd responding in support. The second-half began with the Giants in the ascendancy and on 45 minutes they extended their lead with almost a replica try from Jake Wardle, this time Oliver Russell providing the lofted kick to the left corner for the debutant to soar and clutch away from the Vikings defenders.

Sam Wood added the extras, but on 54 minutes a penalty set up field position for the Vikings and passing to the right put Ryan Ince over, Tom Gilmore adding a fine conversion.

The Giants hit back strongly, a Jordan Rankin kick forcing a goal line drop out followed by two scrums just metres out and on 57 minutes Ukuma Ta’ai forced his way over for a try on the left, Sam Wood adding the extras.

Yet again though discipline added needless pressure on the Giants as consecutive penalties and the sinbinning of Jake Wardle on 66 minutes resulted in a Tom Gilmore try after Greg Burke had sucked in the defence, goaled by the try scorer.

The Giants though had added a determined streak to their play in this match and despite being a man down  took the game to the Vikings excellent passing and support play giving Alex Mellor the chance to touch down on the right, Sam Wood adding the extras.

A short kick-off on the restart followed by a penalty gave field position to the Vikings but the Giants defence remained sound and stayed intact to the final hooter, the Giants thoroughly deserving their victory which lifts them off the foot of the table.

It had been a fine, enthusiastic team effort with the debutants playing a prominent part and the crowd had warmed to team giving them a standing ovation at the final hooter.

More of the same will be required next week when the Giants take a break from League action with the sixth Round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, Wakefield Trinity being the opponents at the John Smith’s Stadium Friday 11 May kick off 7.45pm.
