Full Time Report

Ukuma Ta’ai returned to the Giants side after suspension for the short trip to the Mend-A-Hose Jungle to face Castleford Tigers in a match which could determine their place in the Super 8s after next week-end’s cut –off point. Jordan Rankin replaced Jake Mamo at full back in the only other change which had beaten Wigan last time out.

Early pressure came from the Tigers after a high kick was allowed to bounce in the Giants ingoal area resulting in a goal line drop out followed by a storming run from Liam Watts and a try from Jamie Ellis, the try scorer also adding the extras. There were just 7 minutes on the clock and 4 minutes later neat play down the left split the Giants defence, Jake Trueman touching down with Jamie Ellis again adding the extras. The Giants had not posed any threat in the first 15 minutes but eventually they began to get into the game. A Danny Brough high kick was spilled in the Tigers 20 and although a forward pass prevented any further progress field position was maintained and on 19 minutes they struck. Leroy Cudjoe made good progress down the right and after he was halted swift hands gave Jermaine McGillvary the chance to scorch over for a fine try on the right with Danny Brough adding the extras. 6 minutes later more pressure from the Giants forced a goal line drop out and the resulting play brought a well worked move and a second try in the right corner for Jermaine McGillvary. Danny Brough failed to add the extras but he levelled the scores with a penalty goal with the momentum wholly with the Giants. On 34 minutes though against the run of play but after 2 consecutive penalties Junior Moors crashed over by the posts to put the Tigers back in the lead, Jamie Ellis adding the extras. The Giants hit back before the half time hooter however with Danny Brough creating space in the 20 and Lee Gaskell dummying his way over on the right and Danny Brough adding the extras.

It had been an enthralling first 40 minutes with the Tigers storming into the early lead but the Giants fighting back to be level at the interval.

The Giants started the second half in the ascendancy and 5 minutes into the half took the lead for the first time in the match. Danny Brough’s grubber into the ingoal area was touched down by Leroy Cudjoe and although Danny Brough failed with the conversion attempt shortly after a sweeping move on the left put Darnell McIntosh over for another try to give the Giants an 8 point lead, the goal kick again failing. Another score quickly followed this time on the right with a floating high pass being taken by Jermaine McGillvary who went over for his hat-trick. Danny Brough could not add the extras but he did complete the scoring with a penalty goal after more attacks. With a 14 point advantage the Giants remained in control for the remainder of the match although the Tigers did enjoy a spell on attack. Sound defence held them out and handling errors also thwarted their endeavours. The Giants also missed further chances, a Jordan Turner break promising a score until the ball was put to ground and a dropped ball over the line also wasting another opportunity.

It had been a good Giants performance, probably their best of the season to date. Their inclusion in the Super 8s had been secured with 1 further game to be played before the cut-off.

Wakefield Trinity at the John Smith’s Stadium next Friday 27 July are the opponents kick off 7.45pm. The fixtures for the remainder of the season will be announced in the week following.
