Full Time Report

A last gasped penalty from Izaac Farrell made the difference as Huddersfield Giants under 19s secured the two points in a 26-24 win over Widnes Vikings in an absorbing encounter at Lockwood Park to get back to winning ways.

This was the Giants first home win off the season and it was much deserved as well especially after prop Matty English bagging a brace. After three straight defeats, head coach Luke Robinson will certainly be full of praise for his side as they endured a tough battle over Widnes and got the much needed win.

The Vikings had a player sent off in the second half for a grasped tackle on their opponent but the Giants took their opportunities when they needed to.

Huddersfield made a great start as they scored within the first minute of the match. Farrell returning from injury picked out Sam Hewitt who sneaked his way through the Vikings defence to touch down. Farrell then kicked the extras for a 6-0 lead.

After Widnes got themselves on the score sheet with a try and conversion, the Giants regained the lead as Jack Flynn offloaded to Matty English and he burrowed his way over the try line. Farrell added the conversion for another six point lead.

However, Widnes scored two tries and kicked just one conversion as this meant Huddersfield went behind at the break trailing by four.

The second half was just as enthralling as the first with great expansive rugby being played by Huddersfield and were always in the match.

Giants took the lead once more as once again Flynn picked out English who pounced over the try line for his second score and Farrell kicked the successful conversion.

Widnes were reduced to 12 men as their number 11 was shown the red card for a grapple tackle on a Giants player.

Just moments later and Huddersfield extended their lead as a superb dummy from Billy Hayes past the Vikings defence to touch down. Farrell then added the extras for an eight point cushion at 24-16.

After Huddersfield Louis Senior was sent to the bin after holding on for too long, Widnes were back in the game as they scored two tries of their own but two missed conversions meant the score was level at 24 apiece.

However, Izaac Farrell kicked a vital penalty with a few minutes to go and the Giants held on for a deserved 26-24 victory.
