Huddersfield Giants host Salford Red Devils at the John Smith’s Stadium for their 2017 Betfred Super League home opener on Thursday 16th February, kick-off 8pm.

Head Coach, Rick Stone, addressed the media earlier this week and is looking to improve on a strong start which saw the Giants beat Widnes Vikings 28-16 in round one.

“It was a good performance, but we know we’ve always got room for improvement in us. I’m happy with the intent that the boys showed, they played nice and direct, fairly simple and in the end it is a good to get an away win first up.

“It’s a short turnaround this week with a few bumps and bruises, but I’m looking forward to getting back home and playing in front of the fans.”

Stone also provided an update on Tom Symonds, who got injured in the Giants opening win at the Select Security Stadium:

“Tommy is getting a scan this week and we need to see what that says. He’s locked his knee up and obviously there is something that is irritating him in there so we will find out more after his scan.

“It’s unfortunate for Tom, he’s worked pretty hard off the pitch because he hasn’t done a lot of running and the medical team has done a really good job with getting him back on the park and I thought his half last week was pretty impressive and testament to his discipline and his work ethic, along with the medial staff.”

The Claret and Gold now go into a run of three successive home games and Stone is hoping for a good start and looking forward to putting on a show for the fans:

“You can’t win the competition in the first six weeks but you can make it hard for yourself if you don’t position yourself with a number of wins. Everyone’s start to the season is important and continuity is important so we’ve got a fair number of new faces in our team but what we did have and where we have gained is in experience. Paul Clough, Dale Ferguson and Lee Gaskell are all experienced players and that has benefitted our team for sure.

“We’re trying to engage something here and one of the main things is the style of play and the effort that we put in every week and I know that takes a bit of time to build but we understand that and we know that winning helps to build a crowd and if we put in another good performance this week in front of our home crowd, hopefully by the time we play Wakefield the following week, we’ll get a few more people here and we can build on that.”
