Head Coach Rick Stone is excited to be involved in his first Ladbrokes Challenge Cup match as Huddersfield Giants host Swinton Lions on Sunday afternoon at the John Smith’s Stadium, kick-off 12:30pm.

The Ladbrokes Challenge Cup fifth round comes during a busy spell of games for the Giants, but is a competition Stone wants to be involved in:

“I think it is very important, it is a prestigious competition that has been going on for a long time. I think every club, it doesn’t matter what division they play in, would like to perform well in it and go as far as they can in it. Obviously the ultimate goal would be to get to Wembley on the big day, it’s a very prestigious occasion for anyone involved in it, I know this club has done it a few times before, it’s a fair way away from us right now but we’ve got to take the first step on Sunday.”

Despite being yet to coach in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, Stone admits that he has always been a big fan of the competition:

“I’ve always watched it as a kid. I remember talking about it was either Brett Kenny or Peter Sterling 1985 Challenge Cup final, Wigan were playing Hull KR, I was about seventeen or eighteen watching it at midnight on a Sunday night back home. As kids we used to love watching the ceremony and the Lance Todd Trophy was Brett Kenny on that occasion, I still remember it clear as day, he had a big game for Wigan. So it creates big interest, obviously here and everywhere because it has got so much potential and tradition.

"It is a unique competition that provides opportunities for all teams right across all divisions and when a team like Swinton comes up against a Super League team then they really have nothing to lose. So they’ll think “we’ll come and have a crack and we could move into the next round” so I’m sure that’s what they’re thinking and our job is to repel that and put in a good performance.

"There have been big chunks of our games in the last couple of weeks that have been good and we’ve been really positive in a lot of areas in our game, so what we want to do is build on what we have done positively and I think we can improve a bit more.”

Huddersfield last faced the Lions in 2012, with the Giants earning a 52-0 victory against the then League 1 side. However, Stone insists they will treat it as any other game, even with Thursday’s derby match against Leeds Rhinos coming only days after the Cup match:

“We’ll do some video this week and show the boys some clips on some things that are coming and some things we think we can exploit. To be fair I think we need to concentrate on what we need to do, that is going to be our main focus for the week, concentrate on what we think is going to be appropriate for us and work hard at that and if we do that I’m sure we’ll do okay.”

“We would like to get through this game and then assess the injuries, it’s a pretty quick turnaround from Sunday to Thursday. Depending on how our blokes are, we’ve probably got about twenty or twenty-one players in the mix for this weekend, there might be some senior players rested. I just think it provides an opportunity for everyone, if you’re a young bloke getting a go and a game like this where you’ve got to show the coach that maybe he has got it wrong in other games and you deserve that little bit more time in the main competition as well.”
