Rick Stone looks ahead to Sunday’s match against Catalans Dragons

Head Coach Rick Stone is looking forward to his first Dacia Magic Weekend as the Giants face Catalans Dragons on Sunday, kick-off 1:00pm.

Speaking to the media ahead of this Sunday’s Dacia Magic Weekend game, Stone expressed his excitement to make his first trip to St. James Park:

“I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about it, good atmosphere, good town Newcastle, good stadium, I’m sure all the players are looking forward to going and playing on a stage like that. I think it brings the best out of players when there is an atmosphere and there is a little bit of electricity around the place so we’re looking forward to it. We’ve had a week off so we’re hopefully a bit fresher, we finished the last couple of weeks against Leeds and Castleford with some decent performances so hopefully we can pick up from where we left off there with some momentum.”

Stone gave an injury update ahead of the clash and hinted towards who could feature:

“We’re working through training in the week, Leroy Cudjoe is one that could be a consideration. Depending on how he trains today would give us a fair indication of whether he is going to play at the weekend, we’ll know a bit more by the time we finish today and how he pulls up tomorrow. Ukuma won’t be available for another couple of weeks so he’s not a possibility.”

After the recent signing of Martyn Ridyard on a loan deal, Stone was eager to see him take to the field:

“He’s an experienced campaigner, he’s done it before and we need a bloke who can manage the game and probably take a bit of the Danny Brough role doing a bit of kicking for us and help us get around the park. Lee Gaskell should be back as well, there’s a fair chance that they might form a partnership in the halves for this week.

“Gaskell will be back to play and that will be a boost and it will present another halves combination for us for the first time in a while. They’re both pretty experienced players and they had their first training session together on Monday and it’s looking more likely that they will play. When they get a few more training sessions under their belt I’m sure they’ll improve as the days go on.”
