26-4 win over Leigh Centurions at the John Smith's Stadium

Foster Care

Huddersfield Giants have secured a place in the Super 8’s and moved up to seventh after a 26-4 victory over Leigh Centurions.

After a tough start to the game, the Claret and Gold grew into the match and began to produce some well-worked tries.

Tries from Lee Gaskell (2), Ukuma Ta’ai and Leroy Cudjoe were enough to earn the victory, with Brough converting all his kicks.

The first twenty minutes of the match saw an end-to-end start to the game, with errors from both sides prevented either team making a breakthrough.

The Giants were the side who managed to open the scoring after a well-worked build-up from the home side, as Leroy Cudjoe and Jermaine McGillvary combined, before offloading to Lee Gaskell, who managed run the ball in. Danny Brough collected the extras, to make the scores 6-0.

After a handful of penalties, Brough decided to take a penalty goal, bringing the scores to 8-0.

The first-half was an evenly-fought yet entertaining battle between the two sides with both sides forward pack heavily involved.

The Claret and Gold opened the second half well with two early tries. Kruise Leeming managed to offload the ball to Ukuma Ta’ai who was able to muscle his way through the Centurions. Shortly after, Lee Gaskell took full advantage of Higson’s knock on, who scored his second try of the evening. Brough managed to convert both goals, extending the lead 20-0.

The visitors managed to record their first try of the evening after Josh Drinkwater crossed the whitewash on the left wing. However, the conversion attempt went wide, leaving the scores at 20-4.

The Giants came close to extending their lead after a fantastic play from right to left until Darnell McIntonish’s grubber failed to break through the Leigh defence.

Another fantastic move by the Caret and Goal as the ball was moved across to the right, which fell to the skipper, Cudjoe whose solo run provided their Giants their fourth try of the afternoon and 503 Super League points for the Captain. Brough converted another goal, which brought the scores to 26-4.

With the Giants grabbing their final home win of regular season, the Claret and Gold have cemented a place in the Super 8’s after an impressive run of form over the past few months.

With the Giants looking to continue their form, heading into the Super 8’s, their next opposition is Hull FC at the KCOM Stadium on Friday 21st, kick off 8pm.
