Lee Gaskell spoke to about the victory over Leigh and the delight of making the Super 8’s.

Huddersfield Giants cemented a place in the Super 8’s and moved up to seventh in the Betfred Super League after an impressive victory over the Centurions. With the Super 8’s being the objective this season, Gaskell is delighted with the result after a difficult start to the season:

“It’s a massive achievement, if you look three to four months ago we were struggling. We had a lot of players out, so it’s hard to play your natural game. We’ve had a good run of games and dug in with a lot of young lads as well.

“All the senior players have been fantastic over the last few months, Ryan Hinchcliffe, Sam Rapira, Sebastine Ikahihifo and Danny Brough, so when you’ve got those players standing up it makes it easier.”

Gaskell was proud of the strength shown to get over the line and believes that the performance have been a result of a strong mentality within the Claret and Gold squad, providing the club with back-to-back wins at the John Smith’s Stadium:

“Over the last few months, we’ve been digging in for each other, the work ethic and willingness to work hard for each other has really shown. That was a tough Leigh side, they had nothing to lose tonight and I thought our resilience was fantastic again.

“We nilled Widnes last week and to only concede one try from a scrappy bounce is pleasing and obviously if we keep working hard there’s no reason why we can’t make a push for the top 4.”

Gaskell scored two tries as the Giants came out on top, with Ukuma Ta’ai and Leroy Cudjoe also crossing the whitewash for the team. Despite an impressive performance from the player, he is focused on the team display rather than his own:

“It’s always nice to score but it’s not about individual accolades, it’s about getting the top 8.”

“If we just concentrate on what we’re doing as a team there’s no pressure on us now, we got in that top 8. But if we get a good run together and a few wins to keep that momentum going, you never know, we could push for that top 4.”

“The fans have been great. Obviously when you get a big crowd behind you it’s always easier, but it’s nice to have that crowd and they’ve been fantastic again tonight and they really pushed us through.”
