5 OF THE BEST: GAMES VS TRINITY

Five of the most memorable games against the Dreadnoughts, including a special day for the Giants!

Over the years there have been many great contests between the two West Yorkshire rivals. Ahead of Friday night’s game, we take a look back at five of the best game between the two sides.

Giants 25-22 Trinity – 20.05.18

The two sides met in the 2018 Magic Weekend at Newcastle, providing fans of all twelve Betfred Super League clubs with a great contest.

Aaron Murphy scored the first points of the game in the 10th minute. Giants broke down the left-hand side, before Ukuma Ta’ai passed to Murphy on his left and he strolled in to put us 4-0 up. Danny Brough converted the try to make it 6-0 to the Giants.

A second try followed nine minutes later. Hooker, Adam O’Brien spotted a gap from dummy half close to the Trinity line, and he pounced to increase our lead. Brough added his second conversion of the game to make it 12-0.

Five minutes later and we were in again. A flowing move from left to right saw Murphy break through the defensive line, he threw the ball left to Jake Mamo and he touched down in the left corner. Brough made it three from three by kicking the conversion.

Trinity did respond before half-time though. On the last tackle close to the Giants line, they put a kick in and after a few ricochets, it landed in the hands of Matty Ashurst, and he scored Wakefield’s first try of the game. Liam Finn added the conversion to make it 18-6. Brough then kicked a drop-goal on the half-time hooter to make sure Giants had a three-score lead heading into the break.

Kruise Leeming was sin-binned five minutes into the second half, and Wakefield didn’t wait long to make the most of their advantage. A Jacob Miller kick found Ben Jones-Bishop on the right and he touched down to once again narrow our lead. Finn once again added the conversion to make it 19-12.

The Giants responded well to conceding the try though. Darnell McIntosh powered his way over in the left corner to once again make it a three-score game. Brough maintained his 100% record in the game to make it 25-12.

Trinity then hit-back once again. A move down the short side saw Pauli Pauli offload to Jones-Bishop, and he walked in for his second try of the game. Finn once again added the extras to make it 25-18. Wakefield ensured that it would be a nervy finish. Reece Lyne scored seven minutes from time to make it 25-22, but Finn couldn’t add the extras.

Giants 40-0 Trinity – 01.09.13

A perfect performance from the Giants in September 2013 saw them demolish Wakefield at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Another classic meeting between the two sides happened in the 2008 Betfred Super League season at Belle Vue. It was a feisty affair between the two sides, with multiple sin bins, and also a sending off for Luke Robinson.

Jamahl Lolesi gave the Giants the lead after a Luke Robinson kick. Chris Thorman converted the try, before adding a penalty a few minutes later to make it 8-0 to the Giants.

Jamie Rooney responded for the hosts, by scoring and then converting his own try to make it 6-8. Scott Grix went over shortly after, with Danny Brough converting that try to make it 12-8 to Trinity. They added another on the half-time hooter, with Rooney going over once again, before Brough converted to give them an 18-8 lead at the break.

Wakefield extended their lead early in the second half. Kevin Henderson scoring the try to extend the hosts lead.

The Giants then began their fightback. Eorl Crabtree scored to narrow Trinity’s lead, with Thorman adding the extras. John Skandalis then got another back, with Thorman once again converting, as the gap narrowed. Darrell Griffin then added another, with Thorman converting but it wasn’t enough for the Giants, as we lost 28-26 at Belle Vue.

Trinity 0-52 Giants – 06.03.10

A memorable away victory for the Giants saw them nil Trinity on their home turf in 2010, as well as score ten tries.

The Giants picked up where they ended the first half. Forward, Lee Gilmour opened their scoring in the second period, before Whatuira set up David Hodgson for their seventh try of the game. Grix then got his second of the game against his former side, before Larne Patrick added another and Shaun Lunt rounded off the scoring, as the Giants were comfortable 52-0 winners at Belle Vue.

Giants 25-26 Trinity – 03.05.19

The most recent game between the two sides was another nail-biter. Trinity won by a point at the John Smith’s Stadium just last month.

The visitors took the lead in the 7th minute. Mason Caton-Brown broke through a tackle, before running five metres to put his side ahead. Ryan Hampshire converted the try. Trinity then doubled their lead. Caton-Brown tried his luck with a dash from dummy half and he powered his way over for his, and Wakefield’s, second try of the game. Once again Hampshire converted to make it 12-0 to the visitors.

Matt Frawley then responded for the Giants five minutes later. He bounced off a few tackles, before he spun to put the ball down and reduce the deficit. Oliver Russell added the extras to make it 12-6.

Trinity then added another try to go back to twelve points in front. David Fifita kicked the ball before chasing and an error by the Giants allowed the prop forward to touch down next to the sticks. Hampshire converting once again to make it 18-6.

The Giants then responded in the second half. Darnell McIntosh’s pass allowed Jermaine McGillvary to slide in the right corner. Russell added the extras from the touchline. Four minutes after his first try, McGillvary went in again. McIntosh once again found his winger, and McGillvary powered his way over the line to narrow the gap to two points. Russell’s conversion meant that the scores were levelled at 18-18 with half an hour left. The Giants then took the lead. Adam O’Brien went by himself from dummy half and scored under the sticks to put the Giants ahead for the first time in the game. Russell added the extras to make it 24-18 to the hosts.

An error by the Giants when they were on Trinity’s line allowed Ben Jones-Bishop to go the length of the pitch, before Hampshire’s conversion made the scores level at 24-24 with 13 minutes left.

Russell then kicked a drop-goal for the Giants eight minutes from time to give us the lead back. A Hampshire penalty five minutes from time gave Trinity the win, as he kicked it from in front of the sticks.
