THE NUMBERS GAME: GIANTS VS SALFORD

All the key stats you need to know ahead of the Giants’ huge clash against the Salford Red Devils tonight.

The 10th placed Giants head to the 7th placed Red Devils tomorrow night, knowing that a win will move us to within two points of the North West club.

Hastings has to be stopped

The first player that pops into everyone’s head when you think of the Red Devils, is Jackson Hastings. The half-back joined the Red Devils in July 2018 and has been one of the standout players in the competition since his arrival. The half-back is heavily rumoured to have signed with the Wigan Warriors for the 2020 campaign.

The half-back has featured in all 20 Betfred Super League games so far this campaign. Hastings is the sixth highest metre maker in the competition this season, making a massive 2392 metres, an average gain of 6.54 metres per carry. As well as this, Hastings has the most try assists in the competition, with 24, as well as six tries of his own. They aren’t the only stats that Hastings is ahead in. He also has had the most carries in the league this season with 366.

Pushing up the field

Both sides lost last weekend, but Salford still made plenty of metres against the Wigan Warriors. Once again, it was their star man, Jackson Hastings, who led the way with the metres that the Red Devils made in that game.

Salford metres made v Wigan (28.06.19)

Jackson Hastings – 155

Derrell Olpherts – 145

Niall Evalds – 133

Krisnan Inu – 125

Jake Bibby – 115

McGillvary is a force

Jermaine McGillvary has featured in 15 of our 20 Betfred Super League games so far this season. The winger has been a crucial part of the Giants side for the past decade, and still continues to be so nowadays.

McGillvary has made 2061 metres so far this season, an average gain of 8.77 metres per carry. He has also scored 14 tries, the joint fourth highest in the league, as well as adding five assists for his teammates. On top of that, McGillvary has also made 78 tackle busts so far in 2019. He has also made the fourth most line breaks this season, with 26, three behind the leader.

Big defensive effort needed

Despite the loss to Trinity, there were still a lot of tackles completed by the Giants. That will be key on Thursday night, as we need to limit the Red Devils to as few points as possible.

Paul Clough – 40

Michael Lawrence – 38

Alex Mellor – 37
