Full Time Report

The Giants made the trip to the KCom Stadium for their first Betfred Super League fixture of the 2018 season without the services of the injured Jermaine McGillvary with Darnell McIntosh taking his place against Challenge Cup holders Hull FC on a cold February evening.

The home side started the strongest with early pressure resulting in 2 penalties inside the opening 10 minutes and 2 penalty goals to Marc Sneyd. The Giants though began to get a foothold into the game and on 15 minutes following a penalty Ryan Hinchcliffe forced his way through the defence to touch down, Danny Brough’s conversion edging the Giants into the lead. 5 minutes later the lead was stretched to 8 points when Ukuma Ta’ai touched down Adam O’Brien’s grubber to the ingoal area and Danny Brough added the extras.

The Giants continued to press and Jordan Turner was held up over the line on the left and then on the right Hull managed to knock the Giants final pass into touch to prevent a score in the corner. Kicks by Lee Gaskell and Michael Lawrence also promised but the defence held out and 3 minutes before half time the game  swung back towards the home side when Jake Mamo needlessly gave away a penalty inside his own 20 and from the resultant play Albert Kelly went over for a try to which Marc Sneyd added the extras leaving the Giants with a 2 point interval lead.

The home side had started the half and finished in the ascendancy but overall the Giants had enjoyed the bulk of possession and with a little more composure could have scored more points.

The second half began with a succession of errors by the Giants resulting in Hull taking total command, running in tries on 45 and 50 minutes to Talanoa, both goaled by Sneyd. Then, after Danny Brough’s kick had gone directly into touch from his own half, Jake Connor touched down to add to the Giants woes followed by Talanoa’s hat trick try, both again converted by Sneyd.

The Giants were spending the half with little or no possession errors abounding in their play, the performance epitomised when Jake Mamo spilled a high kick and gifted a try to Jamie Shaul on 64 minutes. Sneyd could not add the extras and this completed the scoring with the Giants left with plenty to ponder before next week’s visit to the John Smith’s Stadium by Warrington. A vast improvement on the second half performance will be needed. A lengthy stoppage occurred shortly before the final hooter for treatment to Sebastine Ikahihifo but he was able to leave the field unassisted.
