Full Time Report

Dreadful weather conditions greeted the teams at the John Smith’s Stadium for the Giants first home fixture of the 2018 Betfred Super League season with heavy driving rain and a strong wind likely to cause difficulties for the players. The visitors Warrington Wolves had lost their first match of the season, as had the Giants, who made 2 changes from the team which went down at Hull, Michael Lawrence and Adam Walne having picked up injuries and being replaced by Dale Ferguson and Tyler Dickinson.

The Wolves were the first to get on the scoresheet, Rachford’s kick to the left corner being gathered by a diving Tom Lineham who slid over for a spectacular try, Bryson Goodwin hitting the post with his conversion attempt.

The Giants then lost Lee Gaskell to a head knock assessment but they were beginning to cause problems for the Wolves with Danny Brough’s kicks establishing good field position for the Giants. After a goal line drop out had been forced they were almost over on the right but when play was switched to the left swift passing put Dale Ferguson over for a well worked try, Danny Brough’s conversion giving the Giants a 2 point lead. The Giants continued to press and quickly extended their lead, Jake Mamo’s grubber kick splitting the defence and leading to a Darnell McIntosh touchdown goaled by Danny Brough. The Wolves were not helping themselves by conceding a succession of penalties and on 34 minutes Danny Brough added a penalty goal for the Giants. 4 minutes later they thought they had scored again when Jake Mamo touched down on the left but an obstruction was ruled and when play was taken into the Giants half a penalty was conceded and Bryson Goodwin kicked a goal on the half time hooter to leave his side 8 points adrift at the interval.

After the early setback the Giants had been on top and deserved their lead. The second half began scrappily with a succession of penalties disrupting any flow to the game. The Wolves forced a goal line drop out when Jake Mamo mishandled a kick but the Giants defence stayed intact and then Tyler Dickinson had to leave the field after taking a knock.

Errors were predominant  and a melee on the hour resulted in a penalty to the Giants and the incident being placed on report. A score finally came on 63 minutes, Danny Brough’s grubber to the left corner being touched down by Jordan Turner. Danny Brough kicked a superb touchline conversion in the conditions. There were no further scores as the Giants maintained their grip on the game. Goal line drop outs were forced by both teams and Lee Gaskell had an unsuccessful drop goal attempt and when the Wolves attacked Kevin Brown threw his pass straight into touch to negate the attack. The Giants defence had been a feature  of their performance with team work outstanding.

A first success was just reward for the Giants  who now have a weeks rest for the World Club Challenge.
