Full Time Report

Ryan Hinchcliffe, Danny Brough, Adam Walne Kruise Leeming  and Alex Mellor returned to the Giants line-up after injury for the visit of the Salford Red Devils to the John Smith’s Stadium but Adam O’Brien joined the long list of injury victims still unavailable.A Danny Brough grubber to the Red Devils ingoal area was the first item of note but the defence held firm and then a Rob Lui 40/20 sparked their response but sound defence by the Giants held them out. A Lee Gaskell long kick gave the Giants a chance but an error in possession snuffed that out and on 13 minutes the visitors took the lead, Mark Flanaghan powering over by the posts after a penalty Rob Lui adding the extras. Almost immediately afterwards and following another penalty Petero Nakubuwai went charging through a disappointing Giants defence to touch down between the posts and Rob Lui’s conversion put the visitors 12 points to the good . The Giants response was a try in the left corner by Innes Senior after swift passing to the left following a penalty, the wingman doing well to hold off the Red Devils defenders. Danny Brough added a splendid touchline conversion to reduce the deficit to 6 points. Further Giants pressure forced 2 goal line drop outs but handling errors and a succession of penalties thwarted any further scores before the half time hooter. The number of errors and penalties had led to a scrappy first half with little flow to the game. Better discipline and more composure was needed in the second half. The same pattern however quickly ensued with the Giants being penalised for an incorrect play the ball and Lui kicking a penalty goal followed on 50 minutes by a Hauraki try in the right corner again after a Giants error and a penalty. The Giants were now trailing by 14 points but they did hit back with an Oliver Roberts try after a Danny Brough high kick and a penalty.Danny Brough added the extras. A Jordan Turner kick then led to a goal line drop out but no scores errors again prevailing as composure deteriorated and frustration abounded. Oliver Roberts was held up  short and the Red Devils extended their lead on 71 minutes with another Rob Lui penalty goal this time for a late tackle. The last few minutes were a disaster for the Giants with Jake Bibby running in 2 tries in quick succession in the right corner as the defence melted away. Danny Brough was then sent off for dissent to complete a totally miserable second half performance.Huge improvements will be needed if the Giants are to make any impact in Super League this season starting next Friday evening at St Helens 20 April kick off 7.45pm.
