Full Time Report

The first round of the Play-offs saw the Giants travel to the Totally Wicked Stadium Langtree Park St Helens to take on the League leaders with Suaia Matagi recently signed from Australia making his Giants Super League debut and Colton Roche replacing Daniel Smith in a change from the team which played last time out against Wakefield Trinity. The game started almost disastrously for the Giants who failed to gather the long kick off but fortunately the Saints knocked on the bouncing ball and play was quickly taken into Saints territory. A short period of pressure culminated in a flowing passing move to the left with Danny Brough’s long pass creating space Darnell McIntosh opening the scoring with a fine try in the left corner, Danny Brough adding the touchline conversion. With the Saints making a succession of handling errors the Giants began to monopolise possession and field position with Danny Brough’s spiralling high kicks causing havoc in the Saints defence and a second try soon followed this time swift passing to the right giving Alex Mellor the chance to cut through the defence and touch down, Danny Brough again adding the extras. On 20 minutes the Giants were over again; a penalty set up field position, then a handling error by the Saints yielded possession and a flowing passing move to the left gave Darnell McIntosh the chance to finish with aplomb for his second try of the evening. This time Danny Brough could not add the extras but with a quarter of the game gone the Giants had a 16 point advantage. A kick to the ingoal area then led to a goal line drop out and then the Saints had a chance when a Danny Brough kick was charged down but handling errors let them down. The Giants suffered a blow on the half hour when Alex Mellor had to leave the field with a head injury and was unable to return. The Saints were now beginning to find their feet and on 35 minutes McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Lomax combined to put Ben Barba over for their first try of the evening, Danny Richardson adding the extras. Suddenly the momentum of the game had swung to the Saints and a couple of penalties together with 2 goal line drop outs put the Giants defence under pressure but they coped superbly and the half time hooter came with the Giants leading by 10 points. The Giants travelling support had been treated to a fine first half first on attack with 3 scintillating tries and then when the momentum switched on defence to thwart the home side. The second half began with the Saints on attack but the Giants repelling everything thrown at them. On 47 minutes though Colton Roche had to to leave the field for a head assessment and then on 58 minutes after 2 penalties Luke Thompson forced his way over for a try by the posts Danny Richardson adding the extras. This reduced the deficit to 4 points with the Giants struggling to cope. Danny Brough’s kicking game on the back of a superb tackling display kept the Saints at bay and as the game entered its final quarter the Giants found some renewed energy which the Saints could not overcome. The final hooter came with the Giants still in the lead, a superb defensive performance having seen them through.Attacking wise the second half had not been impressive but the team had dug in and found a way to win the match on the back of the fine start.Next up for the Giants is Hull at the John Smith’s Stadium Friday 17 August 2018 kick off 7.45pm.
