REPORT: Huddersfield Giants 12-30 Salford Red Devils

Foster Care

Huddersfield Giants fell to a 12-30 home loss at the hands of Salford Red Devils.

A third try in two games for Innes Senior and a second-half Oliver Roberts score wasn’t enough as the Giants, who finished with twelve men following Danny Brough’s dismissal.

Interim Head Coach Chris Thorman was handed some good news on the injury front as he welcomed Brough and Kruise Leeming back to the starting line-up with Ryan Hinchcliffe named amongst the interchanges.

That meant a switch up in positions as Jordan Rankin moved to full-back, Darnell McIntosh switched to the wing and Lee Gaskell returned to the halves alongside Brough.

With conditions wet at the John Smith’s Stadium, Giants’ first two sets ended with Brough kicks that troubled the Devils defence.

Chances were few and far between in the opening ten minutes, though, and it was the visitors who opened the scorings.

After conceding a penalty on the 20m line, Salford took full advantage as Mark Flanagan found space to dive over underneath the sticks for the first try of the afternoon. The influential Rob Lui, who caused problems throughout, added the extras.

Ill-discipline proved to be at a cost for the Giants again and following another needless penalty in their own half, Petero Nakubuwai ran in free for the second converted try in the space of two minutes.

Aaron Murphy had to be alert to deny a third quickfire try before Salford went close on the opposite wing, but that seemed to spur some momentum into the Claret and Gold.

A huge burst forward from Ukuma Ta’ai gave good position but as the loose ball found its way to Innes Senior on the wing he was judged to have been dragged out of touch by Jake Bibby.

But Senior wasn’t to miss his second chance after a good move from right to left found the winger who finished as if he’d been playing for 17 years rather than being aged the teenage number. Brough kicked the tight angled conversion.

When Matty English overturned possession – met with a great reception by his teammates – in his own defensive 20m, the impetus seemed to have been even more with the Giants.

A good chance came when Brough grubber kicked with Gaskell on the chase and Niall Evalds was forced to throw the ball out of play for a goal line drop out.

Another move, this time an unorthodox one, fell just short when the ball dropped to the floor in front of Gaskell who kicked to the goal area and forced another drop out.

Matty English was then held up over the line and Senior came close again but the Giants trailed 6-12 at the break.

After the restart, Lui added an early penalty in the second half to notch the away side further ahead and after another penalty, Weller Hauraki was over following a serge on the right.

With 25 minutes to go, the Giants needed something quick and that came when Brough’s spiralling kick forced a penalty through a knock on.

Good hands between the forwards gave Oliver Roberts a space to dive over by the right of the posts and Brough kicked the extras.

Five minutes later, Turner’s kick in to the in-goal area forced another drop out but the Giants frustratingly couldn’t muster up any real chance.

The chance of a comeback slowly faded away as a lack of cutting edge and handling errors, along with numerous stoppages in play, stopped any real flow to the game.

Lui added his tenth point of the afternoon from a penalty and when Danny Brough was sent-off in the dying stages, the visitors added their fourth and fifth tries through Jake Bibby on the right wing.
