Chris Thorman discusses the Giants loss to Salford Red Devils

Chris Thorman spoke to the media following the 30-12 defeat to Salford Red Devils at the John Smith’s Stadium and reflected on the match:

“I thought we competed for most parts. I suppose the first quarter we weren’t quite there, and the last ten minutes we weren’t quite there with the Brough red card and the couple of tries that we conceded at the end didn’t reflect the nature of the game. For most parts we competed, but when you make thirteen errors with the ball, unforced, and when you concede twelve penalties, you’re going to be chasing your tail a little bit.

“I’m frustrated with some of the things that we’ve really highlighted in practice. Salford hit us with a couple of sucker-punches. In terms of the stuff that we have practiced, we didn’t do on maybe two occasions and we conceded two tries, and ultimately, those two tries in the first half were the ones that bit us on the backside.

“On top of that, the unforced errors with the ball and the missed opportunities, especially in the first-half, or even the second-half, on our left side and their right edge. I thought our execution, Jordan Rankin to Innes Senior from the scrum, Aaron Murphy to Innes Senior, just didn’t quite execute. When you need to get the two points, you have to execute and you need to be clinical, and I thought we were a little bit off in terms of that.

“We’ll review it. We’ve trained much better than what we have been doing before. We’ve had some clear intentions and focus. I’ve had an opportunity to give everybody a job. I’m not just talking about the players but the staff as well, there’s clear focus of what their job is.

“When you make 13 errors with the ball when there’s a good opportunity to turn the screw a little bit. Honestly, every time we win a game, although it’s not been a lot this year, the play count to the play of the ball count is very similar or in our favour. The play of the ball counts today was 30 more in their favour. If we do that, we’re not going to compete – it’s a fact.

Thorman also spoke about the squad’s injury situation:

“I lost Adam O’Brien in the week build up. Kruise Leeming played 80 minutes having been out for a decent period of time. Adam will hopefully be back, he had a broken nose which wouldn’t stop bleeding but all being well he’ll go under a protocol test this week and will be available.

"We got hamstring injuries to Dale Ferguson and Michael Lawrence last week and they probably won't make it for Friday against St Helens, the five day turnaround will just come too quickly for Michael Lawrence, Dale will be out for about 6 weeks.

“A couple of boys played today who shouldn’t have really. You need your most experienced players on the field and Hinchy and Brough put their hand up and had a real crack for us.”
