Huddersfield Giants U19’s women’s team are to host their very first game against Royal Navy U19’s on Sunday 17th June, 2pm KO at Orchard Park, home of the Huddersfield YMCA. This will be the first ever women’s team game for the Huddersfield Giants.

The history of rugby football goes back to August 1895 where the formation of men’s rugby league began and the rise of the famous claret and gold club from its historic Fartown base started. As the birthplace of rugby league, Huddersfield Giants recognises the significance of having a women’s team.

With more than 18,000 women now regularly participating in rugby league in the UK, it has been imperative to have a distinguished and well known women’s team in Huddersfield as the birthplace of Rugby League. Huddersfield Giants Women is a founding member of the Women’s Super League, just as the men’s team was an original founding member of the game in 1895.

Huddersfield Giants Community have continued to work with local community teams to increase participation with women and girls into rugby league. Trials were held for women and girls in January and the selected team have been in training at the Giants training facility ever since. A number of girls that will play as part of the Huddersfield Giants U19’s will stay play for their community clubs.

Steve Stead, U19’s Womens Team Head Coach commented, “The girls have been training really hard and we are eager to get them on the pitch. We have a brand new team who have never played competitive rugby together so it will be our first chance to see what they can do. We have some very capable players who will be pushing for a place in our Super League side next year and this year will give them the platform to showcase their talent and earn a place in that side.”
