Giants Head Coach Simon Woolford will have three opportunities to test his new look 2019 squad out ahead of the opening game of the Betfred Super League season. The Claret and Gold will face Bradford at the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday 13th January in a testimonial game for Michael Lawrence before heading up to Cumbria the following weekend to face Workington and then making the short journey midweek on the 22nd or 23rd January to face Wakefield. The precise date of this game is dependent upon both Clubs start dates the following week in Super League.

Woolford told of his aims ahead of these games as his squad reported in today for pre-season training: “It’s funny how the games come around quicker than you think and the key one will be the final game we’ll play across at Wakefield which will ideally be 9 days out from our opening Super league game. We start with a clean slate and the players will know exactly what we expect from them if they want to be in line for selection come round one. Our one home game will see a good number play and we want if all goes to plan to give the home fans the chance to see every new player have a run and hopefully get a good crowd for Michael Lawrence as it’s his testimonial game. Anyone who doesn’t make that game through injury or poor training (new signing or not) will go to up to Workington and have to play well there to get a shot at the final trial game at Wakefield where ideally I’ll look to take 19 and the of course whittle down to 17 for the week after.”
