Update as pre-season training commences

Foster Care

As day one of the pre-season campaign draws to a close caught up with Head of Performance Mark Andrews and Head Coach Simon Woolford ahead of what’s expected to be a tough few months for the new look 2019 squad and they explained a few of the changes already implemented.

Mark Andrews said: “From the word go we were looking at everyone and everything here which was my remit from Richard and how we could work towards being competitive again back at the top end of the Super League and whilst we were probably all pleased with the turnaround towards the middle of last year we very much had our eyes on this pre-season campaign. We have made changes to both staff and facility with the medical department in particular now having both a new home and personnel involved. We’ve taken extra space at the Giants Training Centre and turned that exclusively into our physiotherapy and welfare area which will be staffed by Steve Hardisty on the welfare side and by Dave O’Sullivan, Adam Rowlands and Will Carlos on medical together with other back up for soft tissue and massage. Dave is well known to everyone here and is the current England RL Head Physio and he will oversee all matters and particularly the development of the younger staff who he will mentor. Adam Rowlands is currently the England Knights Head Physio and will join up with us in the next day or so after he has returned from PNG and is excited to be back in Super League and is an experienced RL man which we felt we needed. On the strength and conditioning side, Chris Stewart and Adam Megretton have been promoted due to their work ethic and knowledge base and we have worked hard over the last six weeks to prepare a programme to get us in the best possible position from a physical perspective.”

Head Coach Simon Woolford said “I have to thank Ken, Richard and the board for pushing forward with the changes that both Mark and I felt were needed to improve us. I don’t think we’re quite finished just yet with the odd player still overseas and some recovering from operations and of course Jerry and Kruise with England, but we’ve all got plenty to get stuck into and that process has most definitely started today for the players. Bump’s an experienced operator with conditioning and medical and I’m happy with where we are sat.”
