John Kear talks Sunday's clash and the impact of Michael Lawrence

Foster Care

John Kear is looking forward to Sunday’s clash with the Huddersfield Giants, and the Bradford Coach is excited to mark the career of Michael Lawrence by providing the opposition for his testimonial game

“I’m very excited about the clash, it’s a game against Super League quality opposition and a test of our squad – it’s a heck of a challenge, especially for our younger lads and a true test of our squad depth!”

Kear spoke about the impact of Lawrence and believes his attitude to the game is an example for others to follow, especially considering his adaptability across his long career.

“Michael is a fantastic role model for those playing the game. He gets on with it, he’s humble, hard-working and gifted.

“His move from the three-quarters when he started his career through to working through the middle now is a true testament to his adaptability and his drive to succeed in the game. All of us at the Bulls wish him well in his testimonial year, for the game and with the new season.”

Kear is looking to get as much as he can out of the game and will be looking to settle on a starting thirteen and work on the Bulls pattern of play for the new season with the run-out against the Claret and Gold.

“We’ll be looking at our combinations; half-back pairings, centre pairings and different people in the middle.

“We’ve been using our pre-season as a chance to get everyone up to speed with the systems and structures, but we need to look at the fundamentals – being committed and hard-working and working together.”

The former Wakefield and Batley coach is looking forward to the challenge of competing at the higher level, having won promotion to the Championship in 2018. Kear is looking forward to being competitive and challenging in the second-tier.

“It’s a new adventure for us, with our promotion to the Championship. We all know Bradford have great potential in the long term, but we have to look at the short-term and our 12 months in the Championship.

“We want to be competitive, we know the Championship is a really competitive league and we want to have a crack at finishing as near to the playoffs as we can. We’re well set to do that, we have a large squad and we have a lot of quality in that squad.”

Tickets are still available for Michael Lawrence Testimonial, and can be purchased from the Giants Ticket Office or from
