Simon Woolford offers his thoughts after the Giants fall to an opening day defeat

Simon Woolford pointed to deficiencies on both side of the ball as the Giants fell to an opening day defeat to Salford Red Devils.

“From an attack point of view we weren’t at our best, we’ve had a some disruptions over the last couple of weeks” said Woolford.

“Defensively I was really disappointed. We made the same mistakes and a lot of their tries were of similar and we didn’t learn from that"

Woolford might have been disappointed with the performance, but saw hope in the showing from young Izaac Farrell, making his first full Super League apperance, but feels other more senior players didn't step up in the same way.

"On a positive note the fact that Izaac Farrell was voted man of the match I think he played really composed for a young kid”

“Unfortunately we didn’t have that from some of our senior players”  “Yeah I thought at 8 all we made a line break you know I thought we were coming over the top of them."

Injuries unsettled the Giants line-up for the game, but Woolford doesn't blame the missing players for the defeat.

“Injuries are going to happen unfortunately they’ve happened to us earlier in the year, but when you’ve got Farrell and Sam Hewitt and even Walne those guys they did their bit, again it was the guys there that we expect more from that didn’t quite get their bit right so while the injuries are just disruption they are not ideal, but that’s not the reason why we lost tonight “

With a debut try for Akuila Uate and Matt Frawley making his first start for the Giants, Woolford insists that combinations need game time to gel.

“I think Frawley showed some good touches you know Akuila has missed a lot of the pre-season because of his ankle you know him and Jordan Turner their combination was not where it needed to be tonight you know we put Akuila over to the right because Jermaine was busted and Darnell played the whole of last year on the left so we made that change, looks its disappointing but its Round 1 you know there is no need to be hitting panic buttons yet but we certainly need to be better next week “

Woolford offered updates on the players missing from tonight, and hopes that a number of familiar faces should return for next weeks trip to the South of France.

“Gaskell hopeful for next week, Murphy definite next week Warrington hopefully we should have a couple more back and Jermiaine so they are on their way back Daniel Smith will go and play for Featherstone and get a couple of games under his belt and obviously he’s missed the pre-season so he needs to go next week when he’s fit and to get into a couple of games."
