LEYLAND AND JAGGER TRIUMPH AT GIANTS CRICKET DAY

Oli Leyland and Lewis Jagger held their nerve to take home the honours at the annual HGSA Cricket Day at Honley CC yesterday.

Given the squads immense injury list, it was not possible for England to again play the Rest of the World so a six pairs format was decided upon with results to follow.

An open draw took place with youngsters in the crowd and resulted in the following pairs:

Jim Lenihan and Jack Billington, Sam Hewitt and Joe Greenwood, Tristan Powell and Kieran Rush, Logan Blacker and Marshall Land, Oli Leyland and Lewis Jagger, Matty Hanley and Tanguy Zenon.

Each pair faced 4 overs from their opponents (2 overs bowled each ) and if a wicket fell the runs total was reduced by 5, with the 4 overs were still completed.

Round 1 results:

Lenihan/Billington beat Hewitt/Greenwood by 2 runs

Powell/Rush beat Blacker/Land by 4 runs

Leyland/Jagger beat Hanley/Zenon by 26 runs         

Semi final results;

Lenihan/Billington beat Powell/Rush by 16 runs

Leyland/Jagger beat Hewitt/Greenwood by 2 runs

Final result:

Leyland/Jagger beat Lenihan/Billington by 8 runs

Highlights of the day included a world class caught and bowled from Jack Billington off a stinging missile like drive from Tristan Powell, a one-handed boundary catch by Matty Hanley and a strong semi final batting display from Jim Lenihan who peppered the nearby houses, ably assisted in that regard by Joe Greenwood and Jack Billington. 

Ultimately the result of games came down to the wickets taken with the semi finalist’s soon learning that Umpire Woolford had his trigger finger poised for repeated action. 

The action intensified in the final and Coach Lenihan made his intentions clear backhanding Leyland in the final causing some scenes before Umpire Ramsden confirmed the dismissal. 

Needing a wicket in the final Billington over for victory, the coach's hopes were dashed by resolute and intelligent batting from Leyland and Jagger with Jagger ultimately seeing off the pacey Billington to claim a famous victory.

The club would like to thank the HGSA for their superb organisation of a really great family fun event, as well as the players and coaches for a fun game and of course the supporters who turned out for what ended up a lovely sunny afternoon.
