HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS REVEAL WOMEN'S SUPER LEAGUE AMBITION

Huddersfield Giants launch Girls Under 19s team

Huddersfield Giants Community are pleased to announce details of development plans to increase Women and Girls Rugby League participation in the local area through an Under 19s team for 2018 with the overall aim of producing a competitive Women’s Super League team in 2019.

In order to achieve this, there will be an increased focus upon Women’s and Girls Rugby League in 2018 through the introduction of programmes and initiatives suitable for girls aged 11-19. These initiatives follow on from three years of Sky Try delivery within local secondary schools as well as a recent Women’s Touch Rugby League programme funded through StreetGames.

Initiatives to be introduced will include further Sky Try taster sessions in local schools and community clubs, a Girls England Talent Pathway Programme, Touch Rugby League festivals and the introduction of a Huddersfield Giants Girls Under 19’s team. Opportunities will also be available within our Elite Sports Education Academy with the expansion of courses.

We can officially announce two open trial sessions to be held at The Zone for girls interested in joining the new under 19’s team to take place on Saturday 13th and Saturday 27th January 2018.

Huddersfield Giants Head of Community Development, Jonathan Timms commented:

“We are delighted to announce plans of our woman and girls Rugby League development plan. As a Community Trust we are passionate about the development of female sport and are extremely excited about the journey ahead. I am delighted to invite females from the local area to attend our open access trial sessions as well as any potential commercial partners to join us on this exciting journey”.

Steve Stead, Under 19s Girls Coach added:

“This is an amazing opportunity providing a complete pathway from community teams to professional rugby league. The women & girls game is growing and we are thrilled to be a founding member of the Women’s Super League. The introduction of an U19’s team for 2018 will hopefully bridge a gap between youth and open age girl’s Rugby League and provide a platform to develop and gain experience before entering the Super League.

“Our work with community teams to increase participation is imperative to the success of this project and we will be looking to create links with clubs to ensure the sustainability of Women & Girls Rugby League in Huddersfield and Kirklees.”

Further details of the development plan will be released in the coming months.

To register your interest in attending the Under 19’s open trial sessions, please contact Steve Stead on steve.stead@huddersfieldcommunitytrust.co.uk or call 01484 484 178.
