Dewsbury Rams | Match Preview

The Giants prepare to make the short trip over to the Flair Stadium on the 21st of January in their first pre-season friendly of the year as they face local rivals Dewsbury Rams.

The last time these two teams met, it was a dominant performance by the Giants as they scored 13 tries, defeating the Rams 64-12, with the Giants pre-season schedule disrupted with postponements, A full-strength Giants side picked apart then League 1 Dewsbury with a huge win.

Training ahead of the 2024 season is well underway, with the players feeling fresh after their trip to Malaga, training under the Spanish sun.

Ian Watson's squad have spent a full week in the Spanish city, as preparations for the 2024 Betfred Super League Season ramp up quickly, with the camp covered on our various social media accounts throughout the previous week.

It will be the first time this year that Ian Watson’s team will take to the field, the Giants Head Coach expected to give younger players some game time vs Championship opposition.

Players such as Kieran Rush, George Flanagan and Jack Billington could all feature at the Flair Stadium.

Dewsbury came off a very successful 2023 campaign where they finished 1st in Betfred League One and achieved promotion to the Championship. In that season they won 15 out of their 18 fixtures and finished on an impressive points difference of 408. They also set the record for most League One titles after winning the competition for a third time.

Former Giant Dale Ferguson's side start their new life in the Betfred Championship, and will be looking to test themselves against the Giants as they prepare for a very challenging 2024 campaign, in which they open their campaign a week later in the redesigned 1895 Cup, vs Keighley Cougars.

They faced uptown Batley and Featherstone in their pre-season so far, with a 12-12 draw against Batley Bulldogs on Boxing Day and a 28-14 loss vs Featherstone.

The Rams gave a good account of themselves at The Millennium Stadium, as they fought back in the second half from 12-0 down to see themselves 16-14 behind, however as changes were made, Featherstone pulled clear in the latter stages.

It will be a stern test for the Huddersfield Giants, and tickets are still on-sale through the home sides online ticketing site, with Adults priced at £10 and Under 18's Free, however ID could be required.
