Bethan Oates becomes first player to reach 50 games for Giants Women

Bethan Oates makes history as the first player to earn 50 career appearances for the Huddersfield Giants Women since joining in 2019.

During the Giants Women's Cup clash with Leigh Leopards, Bethan Oates became the first player for the team to earn 50 official appearances.

Professionally contracted by the club, Oates has seen it all since the Giants' very first game back in 2019.

The milestone is a testament to Bethan as a player, marking an important moment in the club's history.

Speaking on the achievement, Bethan said:

"It's an honour to have made my 50th appearance for the Huddersfield Giants. 

"Being a part of such a fantastic club is a massive privilege. To be the first player to reach 50 appearances and the only player remaining since 2019 makes me feel incredibly proud.

Everyone who has been and continues to be involved in the women’s team has helped me in so many ways, firstly believing in me and allowing me to play for this great club 5 years ago. 

The Giants gave me the freedom I needed and I started to enjoy rugby league again.

I experienced the Women's Super League for the first time with the club, a moment I'm forever grateful for.

I've achieved so much in my time with Huddersfield, from becoming captain in 2020, leading the team our in the 2021 WSL Shield Final and earning my place in the 2022 England National Performance Squad.

This year I've got the best people around me and I'm feeling great in my rugby. We're here to compete and upset the status quo, I'm excited to lead this!"

Head of Women & Girls Rugby James Westerby commented on Bethan's journey with the GIants:

“Bethan first trialled for the Giants Women’s team back in December 2018 prior to our first Championship campaign in 2019. She stood out then as a player who led by example, was tough and athletic. 

Over the years we’ve seen Bethan develop as a player and as a leader from a trialist with the Giants to being selected in the England Women’s Performance squad. 

Her dedication off the field has played a massive part. Bethan has suffered injuries over the years but the determination she has shown to get back on the field is inspiring.

Achieving 50 official appearances is a credit to Bethan. Hopefully there will be another 50 appearances over the next few years!"
