Giants Women vs Leeds Rhinos | Match Preview

Huddersfield Giants Women will head to West Park Leeds RUFC (12pm) this Sunday to take on Leeds Rhinos in the final round of the Women’s Challenge Cup Group Stage.

PREVIOUS FIXTURES ⚔️

Our last competitive fixture against Leeds was a memorable one. Amelia Brown’s hat trick, supported by Emma Wilkinson’s try and Ellie Thompson’s 2 kicks, saw the Giants pull up 20 points in comparison to the Rhinos’ mere 16.

Though the previous 5 fixtures have not been of similar success, the Giants will look to rectify that.

GIANTS WOMEN GUIDE 📖

The Giants come off a 36-6 win over Leigh Leopards in the Cup group, where Brown’s 5-try haul and Ana Da Silva’s brace all but confirmed Quarter-Final status.

The outcome of this game is deciding who goes top of the Group, and who the Giants will face in the next stage of the cup.

In the context of the Quarter-Finals, the Group 4 leaders play the Group 3 runners-up, with the Group 3 leaders facing the Group 4 runners-up. The Giants' opponents will either be St Helens or Warrington Wolves.

Lori Halloran’s 21-player squad can be found here, with 5 changes to her previous line-up. Em Johnstone and Ellie Thompson will be out of action while they recover from injury.

THE OPPOSITION 🦏

Former England International and Giants Head Coach Lori Halloran will face her former playing side after directing the iconic 20-16 win at Headingley last year.

Leeds went on a similar recruitment drive to the Giants, having picked up Ella Donnelly (Army RL), Shona Hoyle (St Helens), Beth MacMillan (Bradford Bulls) and York Valkyrie duo Grace Field and Liv Whitehead.

Prop Dannielle Anderson (retired) and Sam Hulme (now Huddersfield Giants) are two of the departures from the Headingley-based outfit.

The West Yorkshire rivals also boast many former Giants in the shape of Izzy Northrop, Bella Sykes and Elychia Watson.

The Rhinos’ 2023 was perhaps one to forget for Lois Forsell & Co. They made both Super League and Challenge Cup Finals in 2023, though fell short to St Helens at Wembley and York in the WSL Grand Final.
