Brian Lockwood

Brian Lockwood who coached the Huddersfield Club from November 1983 to February 1985 has died on 10 October 2024, aged 78.

Brian had a stellar playing career starting with his home town club Castleford where he made 221 appearances between 1966 and 1975, winning the Challenge Cup in 1969 and 1970. A ball playing forward with superb skills he was also a member of Great Britain’s 1972 World Cup winning team.

Following stints in Australia with Canterbury and Balmain, Brian was player- coach at Wakefield from November 1976 to January 1978. Joining Hull KR, he won the Lance Todd Trophy in the 1980 Challenge Cup win over city rivals Hull FC. A further move to Widnes saw two additional Challenge Cup Final appearances, winning in 1981 and runners-up the following year.

After hanging up his boots, Brian coached at Huddersfield and Batley. Brian was a very skilled coach when he returned from Australia and started coaching at Huddersfield. He brought back training manuals for all the players and you had to make the standards before you were picked in the team. He showed, by example, his skills in training and they worked. What a great man & player

In a further link to the claret and gold, Brian’s uncle Herbert ‘Clon’ Sherwood was a member of the great Huddersfield team that won all four trophies in a season in 1914-15.

Our thoughts are with Brian’s family and friends at this time.
