Giants lose out in close encounter - Match Report

Huddersfield Giants were edged out by Wakefield Trinity in a close encounter at the Accu Stadium.

Luke Robinson handed Connor Carr his first start of the season, as Harry Rushton dropped out of the side with Hewitt moving into his familiar back-row position.

Wakefield took the lead after a quiet opening half, with numerous offloads finding their way to Cam Scott out wide, who touched down for four points, Jowitt sending the conversion wide, a knock on wasn't awarded in the build up but play was waved on as the ball was adjudged to have gone backwards.

With the Giants looking to hit back, Lolohea moved the ball out wide and Sam Halsall took on Walmsley, gave him an almighty shove to touch down in the corner levelling the scores.

Trinity took the lead just before the break, with a try from Lachlan Walmsley in the corner, a bad defensive read gave him time and space to touch down.

Robbo's men came out firing after the break, with the scores standing at 4-8, the game was in the balance and the next try was crucial, plenty of field position but nothing to show for it after Wakefield held firm.

Then came the moment that changed the game, Walmsley intercepted a pass and touched the ball down with his foot, the play continued and he scored, sent to the video ref as no try, but James Vella ruled that it was an intentional kick to stop the knock on and the try was awarded.

Seth Nikatimo then scored another as Wakefield looked to run away with the game, fifteen minutes to go, 4-18 and that looked to be that.

Giants were awarded a scrum on the Trinity 20m after an incorrect play the ball, and a classic move from Lolohea and Flanagan saw the full-back cross for his second in two games.

A quick break from Halsall then saw Flanagan in-support to beat Jowitt in a foot race and score, adding the two to leave the scores at 16-18.

Robinson's men had two chances with five minutes remaining on the Trinity line, but some poor decision making meant that the spoils headed back to Wakefield and the hooter sounded, Flanagan looking for the offload but it was gratefully received by a man in blue to seal the two points.
