Full Time Report

After last week-ends blank date to accommodate the World Club Challenge in Australia the Giants returned to Super League action at the John Smith’s Stadium to entertain current League Leaders St Helens. Adam Walne made his home debut in place of the injured Tyler Dickinson in the only change to the squad which defeated Warrington Wolves last time out. England International Jermaine McGillvary made his first start of the season.

Both teams started strongly with the forwards striving for dominance, the deadlock being broken on 9 minutes. 2 consecutive penalties gave the Saints field position where the forwards worked a close passing move which resulted in Jon Wilkin touching down by the posts, Danny Richardson adding the extras.

The Giants responded immediately forcing 3 consecutive goal line drop outs but without breaking through until on 19 minutes on a 5th consecutive set of tackles Danny Brough unlocked the defence cutting through to touch down on the right of the posts. He also added the extras to level the scores.

A Jordan Rankin high kick was almost caught by Jake Mamo as the Giants maintained their pressure but the Saints defence was outstanding and on 27 minutes they regained the lead with a Danny Richardson penalty goal which was matched by Danny Brough 10 minutes later.

From the restart kick off an error by Jake Mamo gave the Saints field position inside the Giants 20 and with the half time hooter imminent the Saints capitalised through James Roby scooting over from dummy half. Danny Richardson’s conversion gave them a 6 point interval lead which on the run of play field position and ball possession did not accurately reflect the game as a whole but credit the Saints defensive resolve.

Within 10 minutes of the second half beginning the Saints had effectively taken control of the match taking full advantage of Giants errors to record tries first to Zeb Taia and then Mark Percival, both goaled by Danny Richardson, putting the Saints 18 points to the good, and although the Giants responded with a n Oliver Roberts unconverted try they could not breech the defence again and a hard fought game ended with no further scores.Vital individual errors had cost the Giants dear but the team effort had been strong. Another mighty effort will be needed next time out on Friday 2 March at Wakefield Trinity kick off 7.45pm.
