Full Time Report

The Giants completed the regular season with the visit of near neighbours Wakefield Trinity to the John Smith’s Stadium looking for a victory which could take them up to 5th position in the League Table depending on other results. The Giants started strongly,a burst by Darnell McIntosh setting up field position which led to an opening try for Jordan Rankin on the left, Jordan Turner splitting the defence. Danny Brough added the extras with just 4 minutes gone but the visitors quickly levelled the scores Ben Jones-Bishop gathering a kick to the right corner ahead of Darnell McIntosh and touching down, Ryan Hampshire converting. A Danny Brough grubber to the ingoal area then led to a goal line drop out but theTrinity defence prevented any score. On 18 minutes the Giants struck again; excellent passing and support play involving Michael Lawrence Danny Brough and Adam O’Brien put Alex Mellor for a try by the posts, Danny Brough adding the extras and 2 minutes later more high quality passing to the right saw Leroy Cudjoe put Jermaine McGillvary over in the right corner, Danny Brough adding the touchline conversion. A penalty to the visitors followed by good work by Craig Huby brought a try to Bill Tupou, Ryan Hampshire missing the conversion as Trinity hit back but the remainder of the half belonged to the Giants, 2 further tries coming on 35 and 38 minutes respectively, by Darnell McIntosh on the left and Jermaine McGillvary on the right after a penalty, both being converted by Danny Brough from the touchline. The 20 point half time lead did not flatter the Giants who had dominated the half and played some attractive and often exhilarating football on a very warm and energy sapping evening with the threat of thunder in the air.The second half began as the first half had ended with the Giants on attack and inside 5 minutes Jermaine McGillvary had completed his hat trick of tries for the second consecutive week this coming after a penalty and this was followed on 51 minutes by a storming Ukuma Ta’ai try on an angled run to touch down by the posts, Danny Brough adding the extras to the second try. A downside though was an injury to Aaron Murphy which led to him leaving the field, the incident being placed on report, Darnell McIntosh also having been replaced. 2 quick tries to Trinity to Pauli Pauli and Justin Horo, both goaled by Ryan Hampshire narrowed the deficit but did not threaten the result and then a further blow to the Giants came when Michael Lawrence had to leave the field on 68 minutes with a leg injury. A late Tom Johnstone try goaled by Ryan Hampshire was the final score in an entertaining match which moved the Giants to 5th in the League ladder for the start of the Super 8s in 2 week’s time.
