Full Time Report

Dreadful weather conditions greeted the Giants last home match of the 2018 season with continuous heavy rain which had started some hours ago likely to make ball handling difficult for both sides.Visitors Wigan Warriors had already qualified for the Super 8s semi-finals, but victory would ensure a home tie. Lee Gaskell moved to full back for the Giants with Jordan Rankin on the wing. Jake Mamo moved to centre and Oliver Russell took the stand off slot. Colton Roche and Matty English came back on the bench.

Early penalties conceded by the Giants gave Wigan the bulk of field position and they took the lead with a Sam Tomkins penalty goal on 10 minutes followed shortly afterwards by a Morgan Escare try when he capitalised on a kick to the ingoal area, Sam Tomkins missing the conversion attempt. In the wet conditions handling errors were abundant causing a stop start encounter but the Giants began to enjoy better field position as the half wore on which coincided with the introduction of Matty English from the bench. 2 goal line drop outs were forced in quick succession but the Wigan defence was sound and remained intact although on 39 minutes Matty English almost forced his way over by the posts. It had been a tough opening 40 minutes with scoring opportunities at a premium but after a slow beginning the Giants had improved and more than held their own.

The second half began with the Giants having the initiative forcing a goal line drop out but again the Warriors defence could not be breached. The first score of the half went to the Warriors as the rain continued to beat down Morgan Escare skimming over a drop goal from 25 meters out to put his side 7 points to the good. A huge Danny Brough 40/20 gave the Giants hope and a goal line drop out was forced but there was still no way through and consecutive penalties led to the Warriors going close but the Giants defence held firm and then with time running out Ryan Hinchcliffe in his last appearance for the Giants at the John Smith’s Stadium before his retirement prised an opening in the Warriors defence and Kruise Leeming touched down. Danny Brough’s conversion reduced the deficit to 1 point but any hopes of a Giants victory evaporated minutes later when Danny Brough was sinbinned for an incident in a tackle and from the resultant penalty a kick to the Giants ingoal area was touched down by Oliver Gildart, Sam Tomkins adding the extras.

It had been a dour encounter played in difficult conditions with the Warriors just edging it.

One more game is left for the Giants away at Catalans on Saturday next 29 September kick off 6.30pm.
